Describing as discriminatory, the All India Management Association (AIMA) has opposed the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) announced by the Centre for admission to all management courses. The apex body of management professionals, AIMA, has been conducting the Management Aptitude Test (MAT) for the past two decades.

In a letter to the Human Resource Development Ministry, the AIMA has said MAT’s uniqueness and success lay in its inclusiveness. It is conducted in both the online and paper-based format, reaching out to a much wider audience, accommodating the mixed education background of students while staying rigorous on testing aptitude.

The proposal to introduce and conduct a common management aptitude test (CMAT) exclusively in an online format is ill-suited to a big and diverse country like India. “While such a platform might work for more elite tests like CAT, which are mainly targeted at students in metros seeking admission to Indian Institutes of Management, conducting a common test of this nature in an only online format would only widen the digital divide.”

A large number of students who would avail themselves of this test would be from tier 2 and 3 towns, where accessibility to computers is limited; add to this connectivity, bandwidth and power issues. An online format will hurt the opportunities of many students from non-metros and less-connected areas. Instead of enhancing the scope and accessibility to management degrees, it will only end up being discriminatory, the letter said.

Citing the AIEEE-2011 test, the AIMA said only 4,900 candidates had opted for computer-based test of the 11 lakh applicants which showed that though there had been a significant growth in computer literacy, the reach has not been inclusive with reference to demographic distribution.

In order to make admission process in the University of Delhi (DU) easy and prompt, the university is planning to introduce online applications from the next session.

This step has been recommended by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). The varsity will discuss its pros and cons in a meeting of high-powered committee comprising representative of the university and principals across 16 colleges.

Most of the committee members feel that the move will result in more transparent admission process. Besides, it will become easier for outstation students to apply. The committee is expected to come up with final recommendations for reforms, by mid-January.

Students from areas like north-east face a tough time during admission process as they have to stay in Delhi for the entire month till the admissions are over. With the facility of online applications, they can visit the city only at the time of final admission.

A committee member informed that the consultation process is going on and all possible options are weighted for bringing realistic reforms. The idea is to turn admission process less cumbersome for students; they are considering the large number of colleges and number of courses on offer.

Few colleges, such as Lady Shri Ram (LSR) College, Hansraj College and Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), have earlier also offered online admissions.

Admission process at the University of Delhi (DU) might change again, as the high powered committee of the university suggested to put restriction on the number of colleges each student can apply for admission in year 2012. It is felt that this move would lead to more realistic cutoffs with less number of lists.

This is just a proposal, put forward by few members of the committee. The idea is yet to be finalized in another two to three sittings. The committee which comprises principals of 16 DU Colleges, might be able to submit its recommendations by mid-January, 2012.

Those general category candidates, who have marks ranging between 75% – 90% and applying to SRCC, are merely increasing the number of applications. Similarly, there is no point for students with marks above 96%-97% applying for other colleges when they can get a seat in most sought after colleges.

A student should be allowed to apply in a maximum of 15-20 colleges. This will help in preparing a more realistic cut off.

However, few like Gargi College feel that it will have no effect over cutoff. They don’t go by how many colleges a student has applied for. An analysis of board result combining with past experience can guide better for preparing cutoffs.

Parents anxiously waiting for their wards’ admission in nursery, have less than one month to prepare as the forms will be issued by schools from January 2, 2012 to January 16, 2012. The admission process will continue till March 31, 2012.

The Directorate of Education (DoE) will announce the age criterion and other guidelines for admission within one week, on December 14, 2012.

Delhi Education Minister, Arvinder Singh Lovely said that there will be a common entrance form for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category students in all Government approved Public Schools of Delhi.

He informed that earlier, every Public School used to issue separate admission form, which was problematic for EWS students. Now, this problem has been done away with and forms can also be downloaded from the website of DoE.

It is mandatory for all Private Schools to reserve 25% seats for weaker section of society. Mr. Lovely further added that a complete list of vacancy and admission related to EWS category students would be sent by schools to DoE by 31st March 2012.

Based on this list, a public notice will be issued for admission in schools who announced vacancies for EWS category students.

Meanwhile, parents are busy preparing a list of schools best-suited to them based on different parameters
