Semester system in University of Delhi
The University Grants commission (UGC) proposed many economic reforms for central and state universities. One among them is the introduction of a semester system.
As per the UGC statement University examination with addresses on external written examination needs to be reformed. The University can make a beginning by introducing a semester system. Universities have to gradually move to a system that emphasis continuous internal assessment and reduces the written examination component to a reasonable level. When universities in Tamil Nadu and Mumbai have already adopted the semester system and, soon, universities across the country would be required to do the same.
University of Delhi is also going to introduce the semester system in all the courses from next session. Some post graduation programmes are already running in semester system. But the teacher community at the college level is not ready to accept the new change as management of examination twice a year is not a easy task and it is not possible to announce results in time if semester system is followed. The semester system would also mean added pressure on teachers in term of creating question papers and assessing answer sheets.
Another factor is that the college is already conducting internal examination at the undergraduate level. So, semester system would already place that internal examination system. The overall quality of a year education in the country must be improved. And the introduction of semester system is one way to do so. It will give students the opportunity to operate in a more flexible atmosphere.
Further, the semester system will also help incorporate a choice based credit system. Students would need a predetermined number of credits, with the option of selecting subjects of their choice from a range of subjects. It will balance the workload of the students across the year and they will be a continuation in study.
