The fast decreasing popularity of pharmacy courses among Gujarat students vis-a-vis increase in number of colleges have resulted in 2,130 seats going vacant this year. The merit list is scheduled to be declared on Friday.

The waning popularity of pharmacy can be gauged from the fact that there were more than 1,500 seats left vacant last year. “Even after accommodating those students who had cleared XII science in second attempt, so many seats were left vacant last year. This clearly shows what has become of a once popular pharmacy,” said JACPC member secretary MN Patel.

Such is the state of affairs that in 50 pharmacy degree colleges, more than 10 seats are still vacant in each college with 60 seats. Diploma pharmacy colleges are worst affected. Such was a scant number of admissions registered last year that seven diploma pharmacy colleges had to down their shutters.
