Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) is a research-led teaching University established by the Act of Gujarat State Legislature in 2007 and is promoted by Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Limited (GSPC) PDPU is supported by a host of private Oil, Gas, and Energy industries through a unique public-private educational and research partnership initiative. The education and research at PDPU is focused on Oil, Gas Energy and related areas. PDPU aims to be a leading global energy University with strong worldwide collaborations.

SPT started functioning from August, 2007 with an intake of 240 students (selected through All India Engineering Entrance Examination) for the 4 year B. Tech program in Petroleum Engineering. The M. Tech and Ph.D programs started from January 2008.

SPT faculty is involved in Undergraduate and Postgraduate level teaching in Petroleum Engineering and in research – new recovery enhancement techniques, emerging drilling technologies, flows, deposition and other phenomena of petroleum fluids, natural gas from hydrates and coal beds, Health, Safety & Environment, Petroleum refining and nano materials. The faculty members are also involved in continuing education, sponsored research and consultancy.
