Before 2006, all students studying in Class X in any type of recognized school are eligible to appear at the state level examination from the state in which the school is located. The state can impose any other eligibility condition for appearing in the screening examination like any qualifying percentage of marks in the previous annual examination, etc. But from 2006 onwards, a separate examination for Class VIII has started. From 2008-2009 National Talent Search examination is being held only for class VIII.
Main Points for NTSE 2010 :-
1.Conducted for only 8th class studying students.
2.The Scholarship in Basic Sciences is provided up to PhD level while in professional courses like engineering, medical, law and mgmt scholarship is provided up to post graduation.
3.Total Scholarship: 1000
4.Scholarship amount: Rs 500/month
5.Reservation: 15% for SC, 7.5% to ST and 3% to PH
6.State quota is there in the first round while no state quota in the final award of the scholarship
7.Prospective date for students in India:
8.Last date for submission: 31st Aug 2009- May vary from state to state
9.First (State)round exam in most of the states: 8th Nov 2009
10.Second (National)round by NCERT: 9th May 2010
11.As per NCERT paper will have 100 questions each in MAT and SAT in the first round.
Indian students studying abroad: Last date- March 15, 2010 will appear directly in second round.
NTSE Examination consists of 2 parts:
1.Mental Ability test (MAT): 100 Questions, Total 90 minutes
2.Scholastic Aptitude test (SAT): 100 Questions
(35 questions from Science, 35 questions from Social Studies and 20 questions from Mathematics, 10 Question Fill up the blank type ), Total 90 minutes.
The students who qualify for the interview are eligible for scholarship. The amount of scholarship has been enhanced to Rs. 500/- per month for all the students studying in Class IX onwards (irrespective of the class/ course) except for Ph.D., B.Tech etc., wherein it is Rs.1000?- paid as per UGC norms. The older system of book grant has been removed. The criterion of parental income for deciding payment of scholarship has also been discontinued.
