English made Compulsory in Gujarat Schools
Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board has made english compulsory second language subject for both XI and XII standards to help students hone their English language skills, . Gujarat State Textbook Association has published Flamingo Supplementary Reader for 11th and Lapwing Supplementary Reader for 12th, specially for Gujarati medium students.
“The main objective behind introducing these text books is to cultivate interest in English among students and give them exposure to the language,” said a board official. The supplementary books have been made compulsory for all government and grant-in-aid schools across the state and will be taught in classrooms along with other subjects. The board will also inspect proper teaching of these text books by visiting schools.
The board has been preparing supplementary reader books for English from standard eighth for the past four years. It has decided to introduce speaking and listening test for English in XI.
