The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) education board has come up with three schemes worth Rs 2 crore to ensure that deserving girl students are able to complete their education.

The education board has approached PMC officials and expect positive response by December. PMC education board chairperson Sangeeta Tiwari said, “We are planning three schemes as of now. The first is to start 10 Maharashtra State Certificate of Information Technology (MS-CIT) centres for girls in our schools. Secondly we will try to support our staff who have only one girl child by funding their child’s education and the third scheme is to support all the students who score 80 per cent or more in Class VII exam by taking complete responsibility of their education up to Class X.”

Throwing some light on the schemes, Tiwari added, “Over the years we have noticed that many poor families do not let their girl child complete their education after Class VII due to financial conditions. The aim of starting MS-CIT centres only for girls will be to ensure that even if these girls are pulled out of mainstream education, they are trained in something that can help them learn.”

According to education board officials, about 30-35 per cent students attending PMC schools drop out after Class VII. “The main reason is that we have 300 primary schools and only 23 secondary schools. The standards of our schools are not as good as the private schools due to which many do not get admissions in private schools. Also, many parents do not let their children complete their education because of monetary problems,” said an official of the board.

“There are many good students who are lag behind because of financial problems. Our scheme will help such students. Any student who will score more than 80 per cent in Class VII will be supported completely by our board till Class X. The scheme has been finalised and we are waiting for a final nod from the PMC,” said Tiwari.

The UGC, in a resolution passed in the last week of August, has allowed universities to consider the service of teachers who have been hired between September 19, 1991 and April 3, 2000 as regular from their date of joining.

After the Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organization staged protests in Delhi, the UGC passed the resolution on August 26. Teachers hired between 1991 and 2000 need not appear for the NET/SET as a compulsory qualification. An office-bearer of MFUCTO said, “The order has come as major relief for many teachers who were affected by the policy. Though UGC passed the order in 1991, Maharashtra, as well as other states, implemented it much later. Careers of several teachers were blocked after the eligibility criteria was made compulsory by the state not only for future but also for teachers appointed on or after September 19, 1991.”

It is to be mentioned that the names of those schools who would record 100% participation in the4th, 5th and 6th standards (as applicable) at the School level Painting Competition, will be included in the Painting Competition booklet prepared by BEE. The active participation of your school in this national activity will be helpful in sensitizing and educating school children, parents as well as teachers regarding the importance of energy conservation that would go a long way in carrying forward the energy conservation movement in the country.
